Genpact Ltd., a New York-based professional services firm, filed a notice with state officials saying it expects to permanently lay off 489 Jacksonville employees Aug. 31.

The company said in a May 14 letter filed under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act that the layoff is occurring because of “material business changes to one of the company’s clients” but did not give further details.

The 489 employees “who are aligned to this client will be permanently laid off from the company’s workforce thereby constituting a site closure/Plant closing,” the letter said.

The letter said the company is performing services for the unnamed client in its office at Capital Plaza at 10401 Deerwood Park Blvd., but it also said most of the employees are working at home because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Publicly traded Genpact said in its annual report it had 96,500 employees in 30 countries.

The company reported first-quarter revenue rose 2.5% to $946 million and net income rose 7% to $91 million.

“We’re committed to handling every transition thoughtfully and smoothly and ensuring everyone is treated fairly and respectfully," Genpact said in a statement May 18.
