When the YMCA in Durbin Park Flagler Health+ campus opens in 2023, it will be known as The Peyton Family YMCA.
The name honors Gate Petroleum Co. founder Herb Peyton and the Jacksonville-based company’s philanthropic work to help families with its Gate Foundation, the YMCA of Florida’s First Coast said in a Nov. 4 news release.
“Our charitable focus is to nurture and protect the well-being of families and the community, which perfectly aligns with the work of the Y,” Gate Petroleum President John Peyton said in the release.
“We look forward to the positive impacts this branch will have in St. Johns County and the surrounding area.”
The Peyton Family YMCA will be about 50,000 square feet, one of the Y’s largest branches. Plans call for an airnasium, a covered outdoor gym; indoor and outdoor aquatics; teen center and Kidz Zone; exercise studios and a wellness center with strength and cardio equipment.
The YMCA has launched a $7 million capital fundraising campaign for The Peyton Family Y. The campaign is co-chaired by Anthony Jabbour and Darnell Smith.
The Y did not disclose the amount of the Peyton family contribution.
“This gift marks the start of our fundraising effort for this new Y. We need the community’s support to ensure we make good on the promise of building a stronger and healthier St. Johns County,” said Eric Mann, president and CEO of the YMCA of Florida’s First Coast.
Owned by Gate Petroleum Co., Durbin Park is a 1,600-acre, regional, mixed-used development in northern St. Johns County.
The Durbin Park Flagler Health+ campus is between Interstate 95 and Florida 9B.
Gate Lands, a subsidiary of Gate Petroleum Co., announced in 2020 it was selling 45 acres within its Durbin Park development to Flagler Health+.
