Calavo Growers Inc. said in an Oct. 21 Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it will end some operations at its Green Cove Springs facility, which will reduce its employment there by 150 people.
California-based Calavo in 2015 leased the 208,000-square-foot distribution center at 4627 J.P. Hall Blvd. that was formerly used by Food Lion. The company, known for avocado products, said at the time it would employ 262 people there.
Calavo said in the SEC filing it will discontinue its Renaissance Food Group processing operations in Green Cove Springs by mid to late November.
The shutdown will not affect its fresh avocado operations at the facility, it said, but that will only leave 20 or more employees at the plant, the company said.
Calavo said the shutdown is part of a profit improvement program. The company in September reported a net loss of $13 million for its third quarter ended July 31 on revenue of $285 million.
The company said it will incur a $16 million charge to earnings related to the shutdown. It may seek to sublease the facility to offset some of the costs, it said.
