The city issued permits Oct. 26 for Walgreens to add two Village Medical full-service primary care clinics to its pharmacies in West Jacksonville as it plans to add at least five in the area.

Horizon Retail Construction of Sturtevant, Wisconsin, is the contractor for the two $625,000 projects.

Walgreens will add 3,049 square feet of space at 7546 103rd St. and 2,901 square feet at 654 Cassat Ave.

The city also is reviewing applications for proposed $625,000 build-outs for clinics at 866 Dunn Ave. in North Jacksonville; 5340 Soutel Drive in Northwest Jacksonville; and 7224 Merrill Road in Arlington.

The five Jacksonville clinics are part of Walgreens’ effort to open 600 or more Village Medical centers by 2025 and 400 more by 2027.

Those range from 2,400 to almost 3,300 square feet.

At $625,000 each, the Jacksonville investment tops $3.1 million.

Plans show that the Walgreens stores will be remodeled to accommodate a vestibule, patient waiting area, exam rooms and support space.

Walgreens will continue using the remaining existing pharmacy and retail space.

Company spokesperson Jessica Masuga said June 10 that renovations in the Jacksonville stores will be completed in 2022.

In July, Walgreens announced it would invest $1 billion into Village Medical parent company VillageMD over the next three years. VillageMD will invest 80% of that into opening clinics inside Walgreens stores.

Village Medical at Walgreens locations “integrate pharmacists as critical members of VillageMD’s physician-led, multidisciplinary team to provide patients with a full suite of primary care and pharmacy services at convenient Walgreens neighborhood locations,” a December news release said.

Walgreens said in July the clinics were ideal for patients with chronic conditions who need multiple daily prescriptions.

It said the clinics accept a wide range of health insurance options and offer in-person and virtual appointments. Many clinics will be in areas with fewer health care options, the July news release said.
