The University of North Florida named Kaveri Subrahmanyam dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, effective July 25.
She succeeds George Rainbolt, who returned to UNF’s Philosophy and Religious Studies Department faculty last fall.
Subrahmanyam will oversee the university’s largest academic college, comprising 15 departments and schools, several programs and centers, more than 300 faculty members and an annual enrollment of more than 6,000 students, according to a April 4 news release from the university.
“Dr. Subrahmanyam will be an outstanding addition to UNF as she has a proven record of senior leadership experience in the higher education realm, and we look forward to welcoming her as the dean of our largest college,” said Pamela Chally, interim president of UNF, in the release.
Subrahmanyam previously was associate dean of the College of Natural and Social Sciences at California State University, Los Angeles.
She served as a member of the college leadership team with responsibilities including oversight of the NSS Advisement Center focused on student success, enrollment management, curriculum, program review, assessment, faculty professional development/affairs, lecturer hiring and review and space and lab safety.
Her primary academic research areas include youth and digital media as well as dual-language learning. Subrahmanyam is the co-author with David Smahel of “Digital Youth: The Role of Media in Development.”
Subrahmanyam has served as chair of the social policy subcommittee for the Asian Caucus of the Society for Research in Child Development and is on the editorial board of “Human Behavior and Emerging Technologies,” “Cyberpsychology: Journal of Psychosocial Research on Cyberspace” and “Journal of Media Psychology.”
She received a doctorate in psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles; master’s degrees in psychology from UCLA and the University of Mysore in India; and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Women’s Christian College, University of Madras, India.
