The Jacksonville Daily Record won nine awards for editorial and advertising excellence at the Florida Media Conference in July.
• In the 2023 Florida Newspaper Advertising & Marketing Executives’ Creative Excellence Contest, Daily Record Advertising Coordinator Codi Gildberg and Publisher Angela Campbell won a silver award for New Concept for the Philanthropy Partner Spotlight feature.
In the 2023 Florida Press Association Weekly Newspaper Contest, the Daily Record won eight awards. The Daily Record competes in Division B, publications with print circulations of 4,000 to 15,000.
• Associate Editor Government Affairs Mike Mendenhall won first place in Breaking News Story for “JEA indictments: Secret spreadsheets, a false ‘death spiral’” about fired JEA Managing Director and CEO Aaron Zahn and CFO Ryan Wannemacher facing criminal charges.
• Mendenhall and Managing Editor Monty Zickuhr won third place in Breaking News Story for “Paysafe selects Jacksonville for its North American HQ” about the announcement from the global payment provider selecting the city.
• In Online Breaking News, Mendenhall won second place for “Eyesore no more: The unfinished Berkman Plaza II imploded,” about the demolition of the riverfront building.
• For State & Local Tax Reporting, Mendenhall won second place for “Curry’s budget legacy,” about former Mayor Lenny Curry’s eight city budgets.
• For Education Feature, Associate Editor Legal Affairs Max Marbut won third place for “Birth of a Law School” about the creation of the Jacksonville University College of Law.
• For Front Page Makeup, Zickuhr won second place for covers including “The Raven may rise from old LaVilla funeral home,” “JEA’s Plan for Vogtle Savings,” and “Six Projects Reshaping Downtown.”
• For In-Depth Reporting (NonInvestigative), Editor Karen Brune Mathis and Mendenhall won third place for “This could be the future of Brooklyn,” about a developer buying up property in the neighborhood for multifamily and commercial uses.
• In Feature Story, Profile, Contributing Writer Drew Dixon won third place for “The Notorious F.I.T. behind Crunch Fitness,” about entrepreneur, bodybuilder and “fitness rap star” Craig Pepin-Donat.
Since 2020, the Jacksonville Daily Record has won more than 40 Florida Press Association Weekly Newspaper Contest awards.
