Flagler College Presidential Speaker Series debuts Oct. 30

Elaine Chao, former U.S. Secretary of Labor and U.S. Secretary of Transportation, is the first presenter, followed by journalist Bob Woodward.

The inaugural year of the Flagler College Presidential Speaker Series will bring thought leaders to the campus in St. Augustine to share global perspectives, inspirational stories and career insights, the college announced Oct. 11.

Elaine Chao

The series begins at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Lewis Auditorium with former U.S. Secretary of Labor and former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao’s presentation “Innovation & The Transportation System of the Future.”

When Chao was confirmed to her first cabinet post as U.S. Secretary of Labor in 2001, she became the first woman of Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage to serve in the cabinet.

As the 2017-21 U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Chao promoted American innovation in autonomous vehicles, drones and commercial space.

Chao is a director and adviser on nonprofit boards including Harvard Business School Board of Dean’s Advisors, Harvard Business School Global Advisory Board, United Way Worldwide, Los Angeles 2028 Organizing Committee of Olympic and Paralympic Games, Ford’s Theater, Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute, the Smithsonian Institute Asian Pacific American Center and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Bob Woodward

A conversation with Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward is scheduled April 16.

According to his bio at WashingtonPost.com, Woodward has shared in two Pulitzer Prizes, first in 1973 for the coverage of the Watergate scandal with Carl Bernstein and second in 2003 as the lead reporter for coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

He has authored or coauthored 18 books, all of which have been national nonfiction bestsellers.
