The Downtown Development Review Board unanimously approved a special sign exception for Truist Bank on Feb. 8 to allow the installation of an illuminated monument sign along Mary Street south of the Hanania Place parking garage on the Southbank.

Truist is building-out a retail branch bank suite on the first floor of Hanania Place. It includes a drive-thru at the 1200 Riverplace Blvd. office building and garage.

The approximate dimensions of the proposed sign structure shown on the application are 5 feet tall; 16 inches wide; and 6 feet long. The sign identifies “Truist” with internally illuminated acrylic letters and the bank’s logo.

The copy area is about 5 square feet. The staff report indicates the design and materials of the sign are consistent with the design and materials of the building.

The sign will be installed within a planting bed on the Mary Street frontage. This placement is adjacent to the bank’s drive-thru customer services.

The staff report also indicates the sign is located on a secondary road frontage, and as designed, does not obscure any architectural features of the building or site.

The scale of the sign is in a proportional relationship with the building’s drive and overhead breezeway.

The design of the sign complements the architecture of the building and remains subordinate to the dominant lines of the structure.

The engineer listed on the application is New Jersey-based Murdoch Engineering. The contractor is Kenco Signs and Awnings in Holly Hill.

Hanania Place is the former Stein Mart headquarters building.
