Wawa is expanding within the region with a gas station and convenience store in Baker County.

Already with a presence or filed plans in Duval, Clay, Nassau and St. Johns counties, the Pennsylvania-based chain is showing interest in the fifth county in the five-county Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The St. Johns River Water Management District is reviewing an application for Wawa to build a 5,537-square-foot station and store on 2.54 acres along Florida 228 West, north of Interstate 10, in Macclenny. It is across the street from a Walmart Supercenter.

Plans filed with the St. Johns Water Management District show a proposed 5,537-square-foot store in Macclenny.

Tampa-based Wagner Property Group LLC is the developer and agent. Cuhaci & Peterson of Orlando is the architect.

The district application lists the landowners as Charles Edward Barber and Cherry Ellen Barber.

The project comprises construction of the station, fuel pumps, underground tank storage, a parking lot and the stormwater management system.

Wawa.com shows 21 locations in Clay, Duval and St. Johns counties. Plans are in review for a station and store in Wildlight in Nassau County.

Wawa opened its first three Northeast Florida stores in December 2017 in Clay and Duval counties.

Northeastern natives who grew up with the chain welcomed the chain for its made-to-order hoagies and self-serve coffee.

Research finds that Wawa has almost 300 stores in Florida.
