Jury Assembly Room named in honor of D.W. Perkins

Perkins was one of Florida's first African American lawyers.

A plaque unveiling identifying the Daniel Webster Perkins Jury Assembly Room, named in honor of the trailblazing attorney, took place Jan. 30 at the Duval County Courthouse.

D.W. Perkins was one of the state’s first African American lawyers after being admitted to The Florida Bar in 1914.

The room on the second floor where prospective jurors report for service was formally dedicated in Perkins’ honor in June 2022.

Speakers at the plaque unveiling talked about Perkins’ character, courage, perseverance and the influence he had on others.

The event was originally scheduled Jan. 9, Perkins’ 145th birthday, but was postponed because inclement weather closed government offices
