Alistair D.M. Dove, a Georgia Aquarium executive and “world renowned shark researcher,” is the next CEO of the Museum of Science & History.

The MOSH board of trustees announced the selection Jan. 11. Dove will start work Feb. 5.

Dove comes to Jacksonville from the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, where he worked for more than 17 years, including as vice president of science & education since 2020. His previous roles spanned multiple departments, including research, conservation, nutrition and development.

“Al is a renowned scientist, an experienced educator, a masterful storyteller and a proven leader from a world-class institution. He’s the right fit at the right time and we can’t wait for him to get to work,” MOSH board Chair William Magevney said in a news release.

Dove holds a doctorate of philosophy, microbiology and parasitology and has a bachelor’s degree in zoology and parasitology from The University of Queensland in Australia.

He is the author of “Whale Sharks: Biology, Ecology, and Conservation,” co-edited with Simon Pierce.

“An Australian native and world-renowned shark researcher, Dr. Dove has spent significant time studying aquatic species and environments across the globe,” the release said.

“MOSH is a cherished cultural institution and I look forward to leading this preeminent science and history museum through its current programming and into an exciting future through the MOSH Genesis project,” Dove said in the release.

MOSH Genesis is a plan to build a new museum in the Jacksonville Shipyards Downtown along the St. Johns River north of the Four Seasons Hotel under construction. MOSH remains open on the Downtown Southbank.

“The Georgia Aquarium’s prestige as a tourism destination that serves millions of guests each year reinforces Dr. Dove’s experience as an exceptional asset for MOSH, both in its current location and as the Board prepares for a dynamic future at the Jacksonville Shipyards,” MOSH said.

“Dr. Dove has firsthand experience managing complex, multi-million dollar budgets, helping develop engaging visitor experiences and building mission-driven, strategic partnerships.”

A new Museum of Science & History is planned at the Shipyards along the Northbank of the St. Johns River in Downtown Jacksonville.

MOSH began to search for a new CEO in January 2023 when Bruce Fafard announced plans to retire.

“Public institutions like science centers and museums are trusted community voices and I take the responsibility of keeping them a vibrant and relevant part of the social fabric very seriously. I’m honored to use this role to advocate for greater awareness of science and history, the mindful stewardship of resources and restoration of our natural wonders,” Dove said.

“My aim is to make the thrill of discovery and the joy of lifelong learning synonymous with MOSH for the people of Jacksonville and beyond.”
