A Family Dollar in Jacksonville’s Northside is the fourth in the area to be shut down by the shrinking discount chain.

Signage at the 9114 Lem Turner Road store is removed and a retractable gate secures the building. Employees at a nearby Dollar General said the Family Dollar closed in early June.

The Downtown Family Dollar at 233 E. State St. and Arlington stores at 1556 Monument Road and 7001 Merrill Road also closed.

Parent company Dollar Tree Inc. announced it will close 600 Family Dollar locations in the first half of fiscal year 2024 and an additional 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores at the end of their leases.

Dollar Tree has not released the list of stores it plans to close.

In a June news release, it announced that “it has initiated a formal review of strategic alternatives of the Company’s Family Dollar business segment, which could include among others, a potential sale, spin-off or other disposition of the business.”

“Dollar Tree has been on a multi-year journey to help the Company fully achieve its potential,” said Rick Dreiling, chairman and chief executive officer of Dollar Tree Inc. in a statement.

“Last year, we announced a comprehensive review of the Family Dollar portfolio, including the planned closure of approximately 970 underperforming Family Dollar stores to focus on enhanced investments in remaining Family Dollar stores that present favorable opportunities for long-term growth and transformation, with more attractive returns on capital.

“We are already beginning to see progress in this targeted strategy in the streamlined Family Dollar banner.”

The release said there was no timeline for potential next steps.

At one time, 48 Family Dollar stores operated in Jacksonville, according to familydollar.com. The company website now shows 42 stores.

Dollar Tree, based in Chesapeake, Virginia, bought Family Dollar for more than $8.5 billion in 2015.
