A Family Dollar in Arlington is among the 1,000 stores that its parent company, Dollar Tree Inc., plans to close nationwide.

The store, at 7001 Merrill Road in Dames Pointe Plaza, is at Merrill and Townsend roads about 1.5 miles east of Jacksonville University. It is two storefronts from a Publix Super Markets Inc. store. It is advertising “everything must be sold.”

CBSnews.com said many closing stores are offering sales of 50% off.

Family Dollar employees said they were told about the impending closure in early March. No final date was discussed, but they were told they would be reassigned to other locations.

On March 13, Dollar Tree announced it will close 1,000 stores, including 600 Family Dollar locations, in first half of fiscal year 2024.

Dollar Tree also plans to close an additional 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores at the end of their leases.

Dollar Tree has not released the list of stores it plans to close. The Tallahassee Democrat reported a store in the Frenchtown neighborhood is closing.

Calls to Family Dollar stores at 233 E. State St., 6765 Dunn Ave., 6044 Merrill Road and 744 Edgewood Ave. N., said they aren’t closing and didn’t know the status of other area stores. Calls to other stores went unanswered.

Including Dames Pointe, there are 48 Family Dollar stores in Jacksonville, according to familydollar.com.

Dollar Tree, based in Chesapeake, Virginia, bought Family Dollar for more than $8.5 billion in 2015.

CBSNews.com said the planned closures represent about 15% of its Family Dollar locations.

The news site said the retailer’s family of brands has struggled as inflation impacts its low-income shoppers budgets.

According to the site, Dollar Tree has said more customers are comparing prices at competing retailers to ensure they are getting the best deal, while more incidences of shoplifting are also hurting its bottom line.

Corporate.dollartree.com, a public company, says the company operates more than 15,500 stores across 48 states and five Canadian provinces. Stores operate under the brands of Dollar Tree, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree Canada.
