Four weeks after holding a community meeting to discuss design of Riverfront Plaza, the city announced May 6 a similar meeting to hear community input on the design of Shipyards West Park.

The open house is 3-7 p.m. May 8 in the Main Library at 303 N. Laura St. in Downtown Jacksonville.

Shipyards West Park is between Hogans Creek and Catherine Street along the Northbank of the St. Johns River.

The framework for Shipyards West Park shows a food hall, volleyball, pickleball a boardwalk and other amenities.

“Incorporating input from the community is vital as we progress with the revitalization of the historic Shipyards area into a vibrant and accessible park,” the city said in a news release. “This open house will provide an opportunity for Jacksonville residents to receive updates on the project’s progress, view design concepts, and share their input.”

The 10-acre park space is home to the USS Orleck floating naval museum and the Jacksonville Fire Museum. The city selected Agency Landscape + Planning to begin designing the park in January 2023.

Renderings of the design show such features as a protected kayaking area, pickleball and bocce courts, a public beach, restaurant and shaded walkways.
