Publix opening in Harbour Place and closing in Deerwood Village in early October

Both projects are raze-and-rebuilds with the Atlantic Boulevard location reopening after 15 months and the Old Baymeadows Road location closing for demolition and new construction.

The first week of October is a big one for Publix Super Markets Inc. shoppers in the Deerwood and Queen’s Harbour areas.

The Lakeland-based grocery store company intends to close its Deerwood Village shopping center store Oct. 5 at 9964 Old Baymeadows Road so it can tear it down and build a new one.

That comes two days after Publix intends to open the rebuilt Harbour Place Shopping Center store Oct. 3 at 13170 Atlantic Blvd.

Publix spokesperson Hannah Herring said Sept. 9 she did not have a time line for the Deerwood Village reopening.

If it follows the 15-month construction time line of the Harbour Place project, it could be January 2026.

The supermarket chain has been developing, redeveloping and renovating stores across Northeast Florida.

The site plan for the Deerwood Publix.

Deerwood Village

One of the first Publix stores built in the area — 50 years ago — was approved for reconstruction in Deerwood Village at 9964 Old Baymeadows Road.

The city issued a permit Aug. 21 for Comet Construction of Boca Raton to build a new 48,640-square-foot Publix Food & Pharmacy and a separate liquor store at a project cost of $9.3 million.

Comet Construction also would demolish the existing store and the adjacent CVS pharmacy, totaling 58,785 square feet of space, at an estimated project cost of $350,000.

The site is west of Southside Boulevard between Old Baymeadows Road and Baymeadows Road, in South Jacksonville.

The city issued a permit March 27 for site clearing.

It was one of the first Publix stores in the area when built in 1974. Duval County Property Appraiser records show Publix Super Markets Inc. owns the building and the almost 5.7-acre site and parking lot.

Harbour Place

The new Harbour Place Publix at 13170 Atlantic Blvd. is scheduled to open Oct. 3 – almost 15 months after it closed for the raze-and-rebuild.

Publix posted signs before shutting its doors that it would close at 7 p.m. July 15, 2023, “to build a new store on-site.”

In the meantime, Publix invited customers to visit nearby stores at Intracoastal Plaza and Kernan Square, both along Beach Boulevard.

The city issued a permit July 7, 2023, for HGR Construction Inc. of Altamonte Springs to build a 56,433-square-foot Publix at a project cost of $7.11 million.

That came a few weeks after the city approved a permit for Fisher and Associates LLC of Clearwater to demolish 54,976 square feet of grocery and retail space at a cost of $100,000.

Neighboring retailer Hallmark moved to a new storefront several spaces east within the center.

The site is at Hodges and Atlantic boulevards near Queen’s Harbour Yacht & Country Club.

Harbour Place was built in 1990. Publix bought it in 2016 through PSM Harbour Place LLC.
