The King & Bear golf course at World Golf Village in St. Johns County is scheduled to reopen Oct. 4 after a five-month, $2.5 million restoration.

Troon Golf, which manages the golf course, said in a Sept. 19 news release that MacCurrach Golf Construction of Jacksonville resurfaced all 18 greens, putting and chipping areas using TifEagle Bermuda grass. The resurfacing work included the practice areas.

All of the bunkers received new liners and sand. Eight bunkers were rebuilt.

Other improvements included irrigation and drainage upgrades.

The course opened in 2000.

“Our goal with this restoration was to elevate the playing experience while maintaining the integrity of the course’s original design,” said Lon Grundy, COO of World Golf Village’s King & Bear and Slammer & Squire courses.

The King & Bear course is the only design collaboration between Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicholas, whose nicknames are The King and The Golden Bear, respectively.

Troon Golf is headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona. Troon says it is the world’s largest golf and golf-related hospitality management company, providing services at more than 900 locations in the United States and around the world.
