City Notes

• Non-profit group Dignity-U-Wear is celebrating its fifth anniversary this summer. To date, the group has helped clothe more than 45,000 people.

• The group reviewing the merits of extending alcohol sales to 4 a.m. downtown has rescheduled its final meeting. On June 29 at City Hall, the five-member committee will offer a recommendation to the City Council on whether or not it’s a good idea.

• Thanks to JEA, workers inside the new Main Library will be able to keep cool for about a month. The electric authority installed a temporary version of their chilled water system at the library about a week ago. However, the $35,000 system will be removed by mid-July.

• Speaking of JEA, it’s being honored later this month by the Sierra Club for the work they do to help preserve the environment. At a ceremony that’s being planned in Hemming Plaza, the electric authority will have solar generators on display.

• Springfield is slowly becoming the Mayor’s Office policy team’s neighborhood of choice. Lisa Rowe lives there and just recently Kerri Stewart signed a contract to build a new house with SRG Homes. One deserter: Brad Thoburn moved to the Avondale area.

• Congratulations to Debbie Woodall of Air Land Forwarders, a subsidiary of The Suddath Companies. She’s been promoted to vice president of operations and will help oversee the company’s interaction with the Department of Defense and General Services Administration.

• Downtown residential highrise 11E has yet to secure a commercial tenant for its large first floor space and there may a good reason why. We hear there’s a minimum 10-year lease attached.

• City Council member Richard Clark used a bit of clever advertising to help him get elected to office earlier this year. A relative unknown at the time, Clark incorporated Clark Bar candy bars into his campaign, but ironically he had never tried one before winning the election.

• The Hyatt takeover of the Adam’s Mark left a few execs on the street and one, Ray Phillips, has landed as the general manager of the new Fairfield Inn and Suites at the beach.

• Nemours Clinic psychologist Laura Bailet told members of the JBA that they should take advantage of an opportunity to help out at a literacy clinic held at the hospital given the current political rift between lawyers and doctors. “This might be the last time Nemours offers an open invitation to lawyers to come to the hospital.”
