Something new for Friday nights
01/09/2009 by Mike Sharkey Staff Writer Those looking for a good reason to either stay Downtown or come Downtown on Friday nights can stop searching as of tonight. Five Downtown bars and clubs and two hotels have formed a partnership that looks to capitalize on the success of the City’s Make a Scene Downtown that proved popular over the summer and early fall. While Make a Scene was held Thursdays, Destination Downtown kicks off tonight with drink specials, nearly-free parking, plenty of security, free rides home and discounted hotel rates for those who have a couple too many and want to spend the night. “This is a direct result of the success of Make a Scene Downtown,” said Jim Bailey, chair of the Downtown Action Committee, which organized the partnership that includes the City’s Office of Special Events and Downtown Vision Inc.The clubs involved include Dive Bar, The Ivy, Mark’s and Northstar Substation on Bay Street and Mavericks and the Twisted Martini at the Landing. The Omni and the Hyatt are also partners in the weekly promotion. Designed to help promote the nightlife opportunities Downtown, the promotion includes many things outside of cheap drinks. Jenn McCoy, who manages promotions for Mavericks and the Twisted Martini, said participants will get a “passport” and wristband. Those who fill their passports with stamps from each establishment will be eligible for prizes that include VIP packages to the clubs, tickets to events at the Florida Theatre and a trip to Mexico. “Jax Center Parking on Bay Street is offering $1 parking which is an amazing deal,” said McCoy. For those who fill out their passports — and likely have a drink or two at each venue in the process — the Omni and the Hyatt are offering “Take the Elevator Home” rates, which are $79 a night. If you’d rather go home, but don’t want to drive, a safety option is offered as well. DVI has partnered with Designated Driver Inc. to give anyone who drinks too much a ride home. “This kind of collaboration and cooperation can make good things happen,” said Bailey. msharkey@baileypub.com 356-2466
