Women Lawyers Association swears in officers

It’s a new year of ideas, events and leadership for the Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association.

The organization, with almost 100 members, swore in new leaders last week and discussed the year ahead.

Immediate Past President Mary Scott of Joseph & Marees swore in President Lindsay Tygart-Havice of Murphy & Anderson. Tygart-Havice led a group discussion on the luncheon dates and topics as well as potential themes for the year.

“I am ecstatic about this upcoming year and all of the new and innovative programs and events we are planning for our membership,” said Tygart-Havice. “This year, we are focusing our programs on not only how to achieve success as a lawyer, but also helping our members to become well-rounded and balanced women in all aspects of life.”

Scheduled were the Sept. 14 annual opening reception, a Nov. 13 luncheon discussion with Ch. 12 anchor Donna Deegan, a Nov. 30 holiday party and fashion show and the June 9, 2011, annual judicial reception.

The opening reception will be at the Blue Fish Restaurant and Oyster Bar in Avondale. Members of the JWLA and those who join during the event are admitted at no charge. Costs are $20 for nonmember lawyers and $15 for nonmember students.

The group also discussed luncheon themes that included a panel discussion with mayoral candidates, a wellness panel and events with local celebrities.

The 2010-11 JWLA board of governors include: Tygart-Havice, president; Stephanie Harriett, president-elect; Elizabeth Oakes, treasurer; Sean Cronin, secretary; Megan Harper, public relations director; Katherine Naugle, community relations director; Millie Kanyar, technology director; B.J. Taylor, opening reception director; Kate Mesic, holiday party director; and Tiffiny Safi, judicial reception director.

Other luncheon dates are Oct. 13 and, in 2011, Jan. 12, Feb. 9, March 9, April 13 and May 11.
