World Affairs Council greets former ambassador

  • Former U.S. Ambassador Steven Pifer spoke to members of the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville Tuesday at a reception before his presentation at the University of North Florida as part of the UNF Distinguished Voices and World Affairs Council Global Issues Evening series.

  • George Robbins and Jim Winston with retired Adm. Jonathan Howe, chair of the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville.

  • Former Duval County Public Schools Superintendent and retired Gen. John Fryer and his wife, Carol, who will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in September.

  • Gail and Irving Sterman.

  • World Affairs Council of Jacksonville member Fiona Strathern and Pifer.

  • Berrylin Houston and former Jacksonville resident Virginia Borrok, who moved to Vermont in 2002 and was in town visiting.

  • Lorraine Allaire (right) and her mother, Julie Lambaer, visiting from Rhode Island.

  • Olivia Bush and Helen Lane.

  • Retired Brig. Gen. Henry Newcomer, who turns 95 in June, will walk his granddaughter down the aisle at her July wedding.

More than 180 members and sponsors of the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville gathered at a reception Tuesday night before a presentation by former U.S. Ambassador Steven Pifer at the University of North Florida University Center.

Pifer was an ambassador to Ukraine and is a senior fellow at the Brookings Center on the United States and Europe in Washington, D.C., and is director of the Brookings Arms Control Initiative.

He joined the reception before his presentation, “The United States and Russia: Two Years After the Reset.”

The presentation was part of the UNF Distinguished Voices and the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville Global Issues Evening series.

The World Affairs Council has more than 800 members.

The group also paid tribute to the late Rear Adm. Max King Morris, who died in 2007.
