‘Family affair’ planned at Jacksonville University

by Karen Brune Mathis, Managing Editor

Stating "it's a family affair," Advantage Business Magazine, CenterState Bank, The Forbes & Thompson Wealth Management Group of Wells Fargo Advisors and ROCG Hunter Consulting plan a program exploring the transition of family-owned businesses.

The father-son team that owns nine area McDonald's restaurants, the third-generation president of Cecil W. Powell & Co. and the third-generation president of Drummond Press Inc. are on the panel, which will be moderated by Jacksonville University Dean Don Capener at the Davis College of Business.

The event is scheduled 8-10:30 a.m. Jan. 29 at the JU Davis College of Business.

Panelists are Jacques and Adam Guske, the McDonald's restaurant owners; Fitzhugh Powell Jr. at Cecil W. Powell & Co.; and John Falconetti of Drummond Press.

Advantage Publisher Brian Barquilla will make introductions at 8:30 a.m., followed by "the transition dilemma" panel.

After the panel concludes, Jim Molis of ROCG will summarize the discussion, followed by questions and answers.

Consultants are Gil Pomar, market president of CenterState Bank; John Thompson, senior vice president of Forbes & Thompson; and Lewis Hunter, principal of ROCG.

"Exiting your business or grooming your successor can be difficult," says the information about the event. "Deciding how to pass your business to your children, or whether to do so at all, can be even more daunting. Impartiality is critical in addressing emotional family issues and their effects on your business," it says.

"Come learn through the successes and failures of others," it says.

Barcelo talking politics

Political strategist Bruce Barcelo is scheduled to present "Reflections on the Current Disorder" next week to the Associated Builders and Contractors Inc. Florida First Coast Chapter.

The event is 11:30 a.m. Nov. 30 at the San Jose Country Club.

Barcelo, who runs Barcelo & Co., will offer "post-election insight and perspective and with just enough humor to make another discussion about the election worthwhile," says the invitation.
