Supporting our military with pro bono services

by Kathy Para, The JBA Pro Bono Committee Chairwoman

Jacksonville attorneys have three opportunities for giving back to our nation's military service men and women: the American Bar Association Military Pro Bono Project, The Jacksonville Bar Association Military Law Section and The Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership.

Through the ABA Military Pro Bono Project, pro bono attorneys across the country accept civil cases from military lawyers on behalf of junior-enlisted, active-duty military personnel and their families with civil legal problems. The cases are assigned to pro bono lawyers in the areas in which the legal assistance is needed. Pro bono attorneys also provide advice to military lawyers on an as-needed basis. Lawyers interested in registering may do so at militaryprobono.org.

Similar to the ABA's project, The JBA's Military Law Section also fields civil legal requests from military personnel and refers them to members of the Military Law Section. Attorneys have the opportunity to review case summaries before taking them. Interested lawyers can email Military Law Section Chairwoman Sarah Toppi at sarah.toppi@hklaw.com.

Finally, the Wounded Warrior Project has teamed up with the Northeast Florida Medical Legal Partnership to assist low-incomedisabled veterans in need of legal assistance. Wounded Warrior Resource Center staff refers cases to the partnership when a warrior requests legal assistance. Pro bono attorneys are then notified of the need and the facts of the case. Attorneys who want to participate should contact Kathy Para to join the pro bono panel (kathy.para@jaxlegalaid.org).

There are many pro bono opportunities throughout the 4th Judicial Circuit. Interested attorneys are encouraged to contact Kathy Para, The JBA Pro Bono Committee chairwoman, kathy.para@jaxlegalaid.org.
