Port to choose one of 11 companies to find next CEO

by Joe Wilhelm Jr., Staff Writer

After all the cardboard boxes were opened Friday at the bid opening for an executive search firm to find the next Jacksonville Port Authority CEO, 11 firms were determined to have submitted conforming bids.

Five of the applicants Bob Murray & Associates, Heidrick & Struggles International, Korn Ferry International, Shey-Harding & Associates and Spencer Stuart were part of the 2010 search that brought former Port CEO Paul Anderson to Jacksonville.

New applicants include Alliance Resource Consulting, BTG Inc., I-TECH Personnel Services, Juristaff, Krauthamer & Associates and Mercer Group Inc. Both BTG and I-Tech are Jacksonville companies.

The proposals will be evaluated by port staff using the selection criteria adveristed in the request for proposals. Staff will develop a short list of applicants to present to the board of directors at its Jan. 28 meeting.

"The short list usually includes the top three firms according to the selection criteria," said Louis Naranjo, director of port procurement services, which oversees the request for proposals process.

The selection criteria include the 10 factors with the most heavily weighted factors, 20 points each, being "company qualifications and experience, and executive/senior management level port/maritime specific project experience and placement track record," according to the port's request for proposals.

Cost, fee and expenses, is one of the lowest weighted factors at five points, along with projected timeline, replacement search and/or guarantee, references and statement defining understanding of need.

Boyden Global Executive Search was chosen for the 2010 CEO search and was paid about $98,000 for it services.

The content of the bids will not be revealed for 30 days while staff reviews and evaluates the documents.
