JU grad picked for JEA board

by Joe Wilhelm Jr., Staff Writer

JEA board of directors Chairman Ashton Hudson will be replaced on the board when his term expires Feb. 28, and Mayor Alvin Brown has chosen fellow Jacksonville University alumnus Wyman Winbush II to fill the position.

Winbush, 52, is a 1982 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, 1983 Naval Flight School graduate as a helicopter pilot and earned his MBA at Jacksonville University in 1989. He attended the university while stationed at U.S. Naval Station Mayport where he served as a flight instructor. He was assigned to Mayport in 1986.

The appointment will be subject to City Council approval.

"Wyman Winbush brings a record of executive leadership, civic engagement and service to our country to fill an expiring appointment. Mayor Brown is excited that Mr. Winbush, who is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, and works for IBM as well as consults with major organizations through a business he co-owns, can offer vision and leadership to JEA," said David DeCamp, Brown's communications director.

A native of Kissimmee, Fla., Winbush resigned his active duty commission in 1989 and remained in Jacksonville where he joined IBM as a sales specialist and has been with company for more than 23 years.

Winbush also is active in the community and served on the boards of Volunteer Jacksonville, Jacksonville Blueprint for Leadership and the Florida State College of Jacksonville district board of trustees. He served as FSCJ board chair for two years. Winbush also is a member of the Leadership Jacksonville class of 1992.

"I always welcome the opportunity to serve the community," said Winbush.

Winbush and his wife, Rosemary, are both elders Bethel Baptist Institutional Church. They have three children, Wyman III, Taylor and Lindsey.

The additions of JEA board members Helen Albee and Peter Bower in the past couple of months gave the board its first full slate of members in about year.

Legislation for Winbush's appointment was filed late Wednesday and will be introduced Tuesday to Council.
