The Florida Theatre along Forsyth Street was the center of activity Tuesday for nearly 3,500 young patrons of the arts.

3,495 students in the house for ‘Junie B. Jones’

By Max Marbut, Staff Writer

The streets around the Florida Theatre were lined Tuesday morning with school buses and the crosswalks were crowded as 3,495 pre-K to third-grade students attended two performances of “Junie B. Jones.”

The play was presented by Theatreworks Jacksonville Inc. and sponsored by Publix Super Markets Charities. Additional support was provided by Duval County Public Schools, said Theatreworks Director of Operations Jamie Kent.

Tuesday’s shows were part of Theatreworks’ year-round schedule that provides exposure to live theater to more than 49,000 students annually. More than 30,000 students attend performances at the Florida Theatre, Kent said.

The next Theatreworks show on the schedule at the Florida Theatre is May 19, for “Butterfly: The Story of a Life Cycle,” performed by Hudson Vagabond Puppets.
