T.J. Maxx, Bealls get space in Lakewood

University Center is clearing out space for T.J. Maxx and Bealls Outlet.

Bayorcor Inc. is demolishing about 45,000 square feet of interior space at the Lakewood area shopping center for renovations to accommodate the two retailers.

Plans show a proposed 24,047-square-foot T.J. Maxx next to a 21,159-square-foot Bealls Outlet. The demolition project is $82,000.

University Center at 3600 University Blvd. W. formerly housed Stein Mart in the space being demolished for the stores.

Jacksonville-based Stein Mart vacated the space when it moved the store a mile west to Lakewood Promenade in March 2011.

Jim Simpson, vice president of real estate for Beall’s Outlet Stores Inc., said in July the outlet at Beauclerc Village was moving and expanding into the University Center at University Boulevard West and St. Augustine Road. He expected to open in February.

A T.J. Maxx spokeswoman said in July the company had made no announcement about the location. She could not be reached Wednesday.

The center also housed a Publix Super Markets store, which relocated nearby. LA Fitness took that space.

A Fifth Third Bank is under development on an outparcel at the center.

Love’s Travel Stops buys more land

Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores Inc. bought 11.5 acres Aug. 13 at 400 Pecan Park Road for development of a travel plaza with a convenience store and Subway and Chester’s International fried chicken restaurants.

Love’s Travel Stops paid $1.375 million for the vacant site. It bought it from GHM Real Estate & Development Inc. of Jacksonville.

Love’s Travel also recently bought almost 2.2 acres at the site for $500,000 from Dixie Gas & Oil Co. of Tifton, Ga.

Love’s Travel Stops, of Oklahoma City, Okla., wants to build an almost 14-acre plaza at Interstate 95 and Pecan Park Road. Love’s Travel Stops will combine the two parcels.

The company said in June it estimated the project at $7.5 million and hoped to open in mid-spring.

Carter cancels Augusta outlet mall

Savannahnow.com reported last week that developer Ben Carter, who plans to redevelop Savannah’s Broughton Street retail corridor, has canceled plans for a fashion outlet mall in Augusta about four months before it was scheduled to break ground.

The news site reported that Carter was unable to lure enough key fashion retailers to the area, according to Tony Wilbert, an Atlanta-based spokesman for Ben Carter Enterprises.

The 400,000-square-foot mall was to break ground in December on 70 acres off Interstate 20 and Riverwatch Parkway.

Carter also is co-developing a 400,000-square-foot outlet mall in Pooler, Ga., with Tanger Factory Outlet Centers. That development is scheduled to open in April, the site reported.

Carter was one of the original developers of St. Johns Town Center in Jacksonville, but recently sold his interest in the property.

Brooklyn Station adding signs, stores

Brooklyn Station on Riverside, where The Fresh Market is preparing to open, should soon welcome Corner Bakery Café and will add Burrito Gallery and BurgerFi.

The almost 50,000-square-foot shopping center is under development at 150 Riverside Ave.

Corner Bakery is building out its restaurant at 192 Riverside Ave. Danis Construction LLC is handling the $519,814 project. The permit was issued Tuesday.

The Fresh Market will anchor the largest building, flanked by Lucy’s Gift Boutique and Hair Cuttery. At least five more spaces are in that center.

Closer to Riverside Avenue, Corner Bakery and another separate two-unit building stand alone in each corner in front of The Fresh Market. BurgerFi will occupy 3,000 square feet, plus an outdoor dining area, in one of the spaces in the two-unit building. It should open early next year.

Across Stonewall Street, a four-space building is anchored on one end by Zoes Kitchen and the other end by Burrito Gallery.

Jacksonville-based Regency Centers owns the center.

The city issued sign permits Tuesday for Brooklyn Station on Riverside and Shoppes on Riverside.
