Make that nine Pet Supermarkets.
Plans surfaced for a ninth Duval County store for the Sunrise-based pet supplies company.
This one is in Hodges Pointe Plaza at 13500 Beach Blvd., No. 12. Target Contractors Inc., associated with landlord Sleiman Enterprises, is the contractor for the $105,700 build-out of 8,708 square feet of space.
Five Pet Supermarkets now operate in the county. Four more are planned at Landmark Station, Southside Square, Collins Plaza and the Hodges Pointe Plaza center.
The city approved construction for a Goodwill Industries of North Florida store in North Jacksonville at 3186 New Berlin Road.
F&G Construction General Contractors will build the 16,000-square-foot building at a construction cost of $1.5 million.
Goodwill spokeswoman Tracy Collins said previously the free-standing store will include a drive-thru donation center.
Goodwill will lease the store from Peter Sleiman Development Group, which is building it at New Berlin and Alta roads. It should open in the fourth quarter and create 20 full- and part-time positions.
The nonprofit creates jobs and uses sales revenue to fund job-placement activities. It operates nine thrift stores and two merchandise by-the-pound stores in Jacksonville, as well as a thrift store and Bluetique by the Sea in Jacksonville Beach.
It also operates 10 more thrift stores and another pound store in Northeast Florida.
Tenants seeking San Marco space for lease have another option.
The interior of the former La Nopalera restaurant at 1625 Hendricks Ave. is being demolished to its shell space.
Salah Building LLC owns the almost 5,300-square-foot building, which was built in 1966.
La Nopalera moved last fall a few blocks north to the San Marco Train Station at 1434 Hendricks Ave.
Leasing agent Geneva Henderson said the property owners are renovating the façade of the property and demolishing the interior of the 30-year-old restaurant space to fashion it into smaller stores.
Prospective tenant types include hair and nail salons, dessert and coffee shops and the like.
Henderson, executive vice president of Lat Purser & Associates, said there has been interest, especially because of its 25 parking spaces.
“It’s a great location, with decent parking,” she said. Parking has been a sought-after amenity for San Marco merchants.
Henderson said the building is 5,200 square feet and 3,800 square feet will be available for lease.
“Since La Nopalera has been out, we’ve had a lot of interest,” she said.
She said the space should be ready in 90 days. The center doesn’t have a formal name.
Red Stag Contracting Inc. is handling the project at a cost of $20,535.
Jason Ryals, executive vice president of Colliers International, confirmed that a corner of Edgewood Avenue North and Commonwealth Avenue is under contract to a buyer that has worked with Wawa Inc. and that the buyer is proposing a Wawa gas station and convenience store on the site.
“I think it would be a great addition to the trade area,” Ryals said of the property, which is in the Paxon area of Northwest Jacksonville.
He said he did not want to identify the buyer.
Pennsylvania-based Wawa wants to open up to 40 stores in the area. At least a dozen sites have been identified.
Wawa intends to open three by year-end and 10 more next year.
The Paxon site is 1004 Edgewood Ave. N. A former bank building would be demolished to make way for a 6,119-square-foot convenience store and 12 fueling positions on the 1.83-acre site.
The property is owned by Jacksonville Parc LLC of Fort Lauderdale. It bought the site in 2014.
Gate Petroleum Co. trains 2,000 to 2,500 people a year, both new hires and current employees, for its gas stations and convenience stores.
Spokeswoman Misty Skipper provided that number when asked about the “Gate University” training center being built-out at 9100 Philips Highway.
The $997,800 project is a renovation and expansion to the space. The building-permit application shows space among two floors.
Duval County property records show the roughly 25,000-square-foot building is owned by Gate Fuel Service Inc.
Jacksonville-based Gate will use at least 5,500 square feet for the center, while existing tenant Stonecore will remain in the space it leases.
A mock-up store will offer training, including for lottery machines and the fuel-dispensing station.
Employees previously were trained in a dedicated center that has since been converted into a warehouse. After that, Gate trained employees in conference rooms in the corporate headquarters at 9540 San Jose Blvd.
Current employees will take ongoing training at the center.
The Harveys Supermarket at 49 Arlington Road S. is scheduled to open Wednesday, not today, as I reported Monday.
