The Duval County Courthouse was alive with fresh faces, and some familiar ones, seeking to gain Continuing Legal Education credit at the Afternoon in the Courthouse event last week. Attorneys Lee “Tad” Griffin and Mary Bland Love staged a mock hearing with Judge Charles Mitchell Jr. to demonstrate the do’s and don’ts of professionalism. Some were obvious rules of common courtesy: don’t be late; do wear proper business attire; don’t leave your cell phone on; and do be prepared. Other tips were more specific to the legal profession: do send a notice of designation of court reporter if you have hired one; don’t interrupt the judge when he’s speaking in your favor; do send plenty of notice to the other party about the hearing (the standard is five days); and don’t schedule less time than you really need. Other events included a primer on the fundamentals of law, a history and tour of the courthouse and an evening reception at the Adam’s Mark hotel.
