Averitt Express Inc. filed plans for its proposed warehouse and package distribution center in West Jacksonville.

Construction manager and contractor D.F. Chase Inc. of Nashville and civil engineering firm Prosser Inc. submitted plans.

Averitt Express wants to build a 60,400-square-foot office-warehouse and 9,200-square-foot maintenance building on almost 21 acres it owns at 7200 Commonwealth Ave.

Parking details show 80 standard spaces, four ADA spaces, 49 tractor spaces and 162 trailer spaces.

In June, the city issued a mobility fee calculation certificate for Averitt Express to develop a warehouse and package distribution center. The property is west of Interstate 295 and Pickettville Road and south of Commonwealth Avenue.

Spokesman Brad Brown said Averitt will build the facility “to be able to better provide domestic and international distribution for all of our customers across the United States.”

He said the center will be used for distribution of domestic freight and international cargo.

City documents show a truck terminal and cross-dock warehouse to accommodate drivers and operators in addition to warehouse and office workers.

Averitt Express, based in Cookeville, Tennessee, bought the property in November from N.G. Wade Investment Co.

Brown said the facility can serve tens of thousands of its customers and distributes commercial and industrial freight such as general manufacturing, retail, automotive, chemical, apparel and other types.

Averitt employs 77 people at a smaller location in Jacksonville at 723 Scotia Road and expects that number to grow significantly with the new center.

The existing location would close after Averitt takes occupancy of the new facility, which is about 2 miles west.
