CarMax, which expects to open its Blanding Boulevard superstore by February, invests $15 million to $25 million in land and development and employs about 50 associates at each store.

Spokeswoman Elia Imler at Richmond, Va., headquarters said Wednesday the store, at 7438 Blanding Blvd., would be about 13,000 square feet in size.

“We like the area because it is an auto row and we have good visibility,” she said.

Blanding Boulevard features several automotive dealerships. The CarMax property is the former site of one.

The City has approved demolition of existing car sales, office and garage operations at the 4.9-acre site, which CarMax bought in June 2011 for $3 million.

CarMax opened its first Jacksonville location in 2005 at 11335 Atlantic Blvd. It operates 111 of its used-car superstores in 55 markets in 27 states.

The CarMax fiscal year runs March through February.

In addition to the second Jacksonville store, it also announced plans to open in the current fiscal year in Fort Myers and Naples as well as in Oxnard, Calif., Des Moines and Denver.

The company opened its first store in 1993 in Richmond. Its concept is to sell used cars in a “no hassles, no haggling” environment. It also operates online.

It reported fiscal 2012 annual sales of $413.8 million, up from $380.9 million in 2011.
