A preschool facility at the Citicards offices on Jacksonville’s Southside notified city and state officials it will have to remain closed for a least two more months, leaving 89 people out of work.

The letter sent under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act by Bright Horizons Children’s Centers LLC said the workers were furloughed on April 30, expecting the preschool at 14000 Citicards Way to be shut down for less than six months.

However, “Bright Horizons has concluded it will be unable to reopen the daycare center and recall these employees for at least another two months,” the company said in the letter dated Sept. 17.

“Bright Horizons is taking this action because of COVID-19-related business circumstances that were not reasonably foreseeable,” it said.

Amentum contract ending

Another WARN notification filed Sept. 17 by government contractor Amentum said 13 workers at Naval Air Station Jacksonville may be laid off on Oct. 26.

Maryland-based Amentum said in its letter that 524 workers in 10 states may be laid off as its contract for Combined Tactical Training Range Systems and Equipment expires.

“This action can only be reversed if the U.S. Government extends work under this contract prior to October 26,” it said.

Besides the 13 workers in Jacksonville, 26 Florida Amentum workers in Key West and Altoona also will be impacted, the letter said.
