City Council member Matt Schellenberg with council co-sponsors John Crescimbeni, Tommy Hazouri and Doyle Carter introduced a resolution to commemorate the life and civic contribution of Marvin Edwards, who died Feb. 10 at the age of 96.

The resolution honors Edwards for his intelligence service during World War II; his journalism, including his memoir published last year about the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the CIA; his work as a successful investment counselor; and as a “lifelong advocate of social justice and government accountability.”

Edwards’ advocacy often brought him into the realm of city spending. The resolution says he “spent decades as a self-appointed watchdog and citizen activist holding local government accountable” and “meticulously researching and doggedly critiquing major public projects and expenditures such as the Dames Point Bridge and the Automated Skyway Express.”

For his efforts, the Jacksonville Ethics Commission awarded him the first Citation for Citizen Excellence in Ethics.
