Aldi Inc. will transform the closed Wells Fargo bank branch property at northwest Philips Highway and Emerson Street near San Marco into a discount grocery store.

The city issued two permits June 15 for Schmid Construction Inc. of Clermont to demolish the bank building at 3650 Philips Highway and construct a grocery store at a cost totaling $2 million.

Permits show Aldi will build a 21,720-square-foot grocery store.

Aldi Florida LLC bought the almost 2.8-acre property with the 12,296-square-foot bank building May 4 from Wells Fargo Bank for $1.8 million.

Land and construction costs total $3.8 million.

Upham Inc. is the civil engineer. SGA Design Group of Tulsa, Oklahoma, is the architect.

Aldi’s Haines City division is developing the site.
