Jacksonville shoppers like their Coca-Cola Classic and Bud Light.

They also favor Zephyrhills water, Gatorade Perform and Diet Coke.

They like all of that so much that they spent more than $10 million on each in the 52 weeks that ended July 14.

Jacksonville shoppers spent $16.5 million on Coke Classic regular soft drinks, the top seller by almost $3 million over Bud Light domestic beer/ale. Still, Jacksonville shoppers spent $13.6 million on Bud Light.

They spent $12.4 million on Zephyrhills water.

How do we know this?

The numbers come from The Shelby Report of the Southeast trade publication for September. Shelby reported the "Top 25 Edibles" for 11 Southeastern markets based on sales.

IRI, a Chicago-based market and shopping research firm, calculated and provided the information for Shelby.

Data for the "edible" category reflects sales in multi-outlet markets, including supermarkets, drugstores, mass-market retailers, military commissaries and select club and dollar retail chains.

The data excludes sales for seasonal candy and private-label products.

Jacksonville's top 10 is rounded out by Lay's potato chips, Pepsi regular soft drinks, Gerber Good Start Gentle powder baby formula, Frito-Lay products excluding nuts and Mountain Dew regular soft drinks.

IRI defines Jacksonville as the six counties of Alachua, Bradford, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties.

Among the top 25 grocery items bought in the area:

• Six are soft-drink products — Coke Classic, Diet Coke, Pepsi regular, Mountain Dew regular, Sprite regular, and Dr Pepper regular.

• Five are beer products — Bud Light, Miller Lite, Michelob Ultra, Budweiser and Natural Light.

• Four are chips and nut products — Lay's, Frito-Lay multipack products, Planters nuts and Doritos.

• Two are coffee — Folgers and Maxwell House.

• Two are water — Zephyrhills and Nestle.

Rounding out the remaining six: Gatorade, Gerber baby formula, Campbell's condensed soup, Red Bull, Jif peanut butter and Hellmann's mayonnaise and sandwich spread.

PepsiCo owns several of the Top 25 brands, including Pepsi, Mountain Dew and Frito-Lay, which has Lay's and Doritos.

Coca-Cola owns Coke, Diet Coke and Sprite.

Anheuser-Busch owns Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Budweiser and Natural Light.

The popularity explains why Coke, Pepsi and Anheuser-Busch have bottling plants in Jacksonville. Maxwell House has a coffee plant.

Jacksonville compares closely to the other 10 Southeastern markets, with a few differences.

For example, Cheetos made the Top 25 in Atlanta, Louisville, Ky., and Nashville, Tenn., but not Jacksonville.

Kellogg's Pop-Tarts, not on Jacksonville's list, ranked in Birmingham/Montgomery, Ala.; Charlotte, N.C.; Louisville; Nashville; Raleigh/Greensboro, N.C.; Richmond/Norfolk, Va.; and South Carolina. South Carolina is listed as one market.

Tuna brands also didn't rank in Jacksonville's Top 25, but did in Atlanta, Louisville, Miami/Fort Lauderdale, Nashville and New Orleans.

Regional preferences were evident. Some products showed up only on the lists of specific areas.

For example, Badia spice/seasoning was No. 22 in Miami/Fort Lauderdale; Utz potato chips ranked No. 20 in Richmond/Norfolk; and Duke's mayonnaise came in at No. 22 in South Carolina.

Badia Spices is based in the Miami area; Utz is based in Hanover, Md., not far from Richmond/Norfolk; and Duke's was developed in the Greenville, S.C., kitchen of Eugenia Duke and has been part of The C.F. Sauer Co., based in Richmond, Va., since 1929.
