The D.W. Perkins Bar Association invites attorneys to attend the second annual “New Year Kick-off and Membership Drive” from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Moxie Kitchen+Cocktails at 4972 Big Island Drive.

The free event is an opportunity for members and non-members to network over appetizers and drinks.

“We believe that there is virtually no limit to the resources of talent and compassion among the legal profession in the greater Jacksonville area. Therefore, we are asking many of our colleagues to join the D.W. Perkins Bar Association this year as we plug in for community leadership and service for the benefit of people who need the kind of assistance, representation and advocacy in which Florida lawyers excel,” said Gregory Redmon, president of the association.

“The event is the perfect opportunity for members to get plugged in and for non-members to learn about the association. As the immediate-past president, I know great things are in store for the organization and I am looking forward to seeing all the successes unfold,” said Amber Donley, 2017-18 president.

The association is named after Daniel Webster Perkins, one of Florida’s first African-American lawyers who was admitted to the state Bar in 1914.

Born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, he became a Jacksonville resident in 1919 and practiced law in Duval County until his death in 1972.

The association’s stated mission is to be an agent of change to improve the plight of the African-American community and to combat the effects of racial and social injustice.
