Local youngsters are getting some exposure to the legal profession through the work of the D.W. Perkins Bar Association.

The group has adopted the Saint Clair Evans Academy on Moncrief Road. Students are currently reading “For Such a Journey,” a book about the Underground Railroad written from a child’s perspective, and the school may soon establish a Law Club. The news was announced at the association’s first meeting of the year Jan. 4.

The guest speaker at the luncheon was Monte C. Richardson, Federal Magistrate from the U.S. Federal Court, Middle District of Florida.

He reminded the association members to be mindful of their responsibilities and said, “Your most important duty as members of the legal profession is to improve the quality of life for citizens and the community. We have achieved excellence, but we all bear a responsibility to help those who have yet to finish the race. Lawyers must lead the way to the future.”

The group will hold its annual banquet April 17 at the Omni Hotel.
