At Florida Community College of Jacksonville’s Kent Campus Career Showcase Tuesday, high school students observed a mock trial staged by members of FCCJ’s family law class. The students were encouraged to participate, acting as witnesses and the plaintiff in a civil trial.

“By giving the students a glimpse of what a career in their chosen field could be like, we hope to give them enough inspiration to make the choice to go to college,” said Elaine Puri, program director for FCCJ’s Legal Studies Institute.

General Master and FCCJ family law professor Franklin Akel presided over the trial.

The annual showcase takes place at each of FCCJ’s campuses and allows high school juniors and seniors to learn about offered curriculum, which at the Kent Campus includes interior design, education, marketing and business management and legal studies.

“It’s a great way to give the students a hands on opportunity to check out potential careers,” said Maria Hopper, project coordinator for Kent Campus.
