One of attorney Steve Pajcic’s philosophies is that work is a part of life, but work can’t be all work.

That’s why the co-founder of the Pajcic & Pajcic law firm called on interior designers, and then contractors, who began a $165,000 renovation last week of the firm’s offices.

Included will be new men’s and women’s locker rooms and showers adjacent to the exercise room overlooking Downtown along the north side of the 19th floor at Wells Fargo Center.

Under its new president, Miami attorney Michael Higer, The Florida Bar is placing a renewed emphasis on encouraging its members to achieve better work-life balance and help them develop healthy lifestyles to help cope with the conflict and stress often faced by lawyers.

At Pajcic & Pajcic, that’s been on the daily agenda for decades.

The fitness area in the office became part of the firm’s culture about 30 years ago and the facility is used regularly.

Pajcic, 71, has a lifelong history of sports and fitness, having played college basketball at Princeton University. He often bikes to the office from his Avondale home, then showers, changes and begins his day.

In addition to the on-site exercise room, the firm provides an exercise class two days a week led by Linda Pickert, wife of Terrell Hogan partner Alan Pickert.

“It’s good for the people who work here. It makes them happier and they feel better. To have a good work environment, everyone has to be happy and feel good,” Pajcic said.

There’s also a quarterly competitive fitness challenge at the firm. Participants gather on the ground floor and then climb the stairs to their 19th floor offices. The December climb features more than just bragging rights for those who finish ahead of their colleagues and co-workers.

“If they beat me, they get a $100 bonus,” Pajcic said.
