Education Corporation of America renovated thebuilding to serve as a teaching establishment where professional chefs provide a learning lab environment for culinary and pastry arts students from The Culinary Institute of Virginia College in Jacksonville. Education Corporation of America owns Virginia College.
Peterbrooke factory opening in April, Downtown store in May
Peterbrooke Chocolatier intends to open its new Brooklyn factory in April with a grand opening in June, while its Downtown store should be ready in May.
Infinity Design Builders Inc. is renovating a former food-processing plant at Copeland and Forest streets into Peterbrooke’s corporate base, production plant and tourism center.
Peterbrooke intends to open a 1,488-square-foot store at 100 W. Bay St., at Bay and Laura streets, in May, a month later than its initial hope to be open there by Easter.
The factory will accommodate spacious rooms for making chocolate-covered popcorn, chocolate candies, cakes, cookies and maybe more. Windows onto each gallery will allow visitors to view the process.
The company was founded in 1983 in San Marco by businesswoman Phyllis Lockwood Geiger. Jacksonville investor Billy Morris, founder and president of Jacksonville-based Hickory Foods, bought Peterbrooke three years ago. Hickory Foods is the management company for a number of businesses owned by Morris.
The production center now leases about 6,000 square feet at 1470 San Marco Blvd., but its lease is monthly as the building owners want to sell the structure.
Morris owns the almost 28,000-square-foot plant at 249 Copeland St. Another 2,124-square-foot building on-site will become a retail store and community meeting space.
