Pollo Operations Inc. plans an almost $900,000 investment to build its new Regency area restaurant at 9370 Atlantic Blvd.

It’s the site of a former Hess station between Chili’s and Chick-fil-A.

The company applied for a building permit for a 3,771-square-foot restaurant there on almost 1 acre at a project cost of $870,000. No contractor was identified on the permit.

Fiesta Restaurant Group Inc. of Addison, Texas, wants to develop the 120-seat Pollo Tropical after removing the old gas station. Hess Retail Stores LLC owns the property and would remove the fuel tanks after the deal closes, the plans show.

It would be at least the fifth Pollo Tropical in the area. Pollo Tropical Chicken on the Grill is part of Pollo Operations Inc. of Miami.

The chain focuses on Caribbean-inspired, citrus-marinated grilled chicken.

It also offers slow-roasted mojo pork, salads, sandwiches and wraps.

It’s one of two high-profile Regency-area restaurant construction projects. The city last week approved the rebuild for the Olive Garden at 9465 Atlantic Blvd., which was destroyed by fire in January. Haley Construction Co. is the contractor. It will be part of the chain’s new prototype.

Kangaroo upgrading coffee, drink stations

The Pantry Inc. is investing an estimated $24,000 each in at least 10 Duval County Kangaroo stores to remodel the fountain drink and coffee stations. The city is reviewing permits for the projects.

The Pantry Inc., an independent convenience store chain based in Cary, N.C., operates almost 60 stores in Duval County and more than 100 in the five-county metropolitan Jacksonville area.

As of Sept. 25, The Pantry operated 1,518 stores in 13 Southeastern states under its banners, including its primary banner, Kangaroo Express.
