Former Circuit and appellate court judge Tyrie A. Boyer died Tuesday night of cancer.
He was 89.
Boyer's son, Tyrie W. Boyer, said his father had been under the care of hospice for the past two weeks. The younger Boyer is also a Circuit Court judge and is married to City Council member Lori Boyer.
Boyer said his father was elected judge of the Civil Court of Record in 1960, where he served until Gov. Farris Bryant appointed him to the Circuit bench in 1963. Boyer served in that capacity for four years, then returned to private practice.
He was appointed by Gov. Reubin Askew to the 1st District Court of Appeal in 1972 and stayed in that job until 1979, including serving as chief judge for two years.
Boyer then formed the law firm Boyer, Tanzler, Blackburn and Boyer, where his partners included his son and former Mayor Hans Tanzler.
Boyer said his father tried his final jury trial four years ago when he was 85 and won a multimillion-dollar verdict.
The elder Boyer retired in 2011, the same year his wife, Betty, died.
Boyer's funeral is 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 255 E. Duval St. Visitation is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Ave.
