Two names were added to the Gator Bowl Hall of Fame Dec. 29 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Carl Cannon and Dave Braine joined the group that was founded in 1989.

Cannon is the publisher of the Florida Times-Union and a two-time past chairman of the Gator Bowl, including the 1994 game that was moved to Gainesville while Alltel Stadium was being built for the Jaguars.

Braine was director of athletics at Ga. Tech for nine years and later held the same position at Va. Tech for 10 years. During his playing days, he was a member of the North Carolina team that played in the 1963 Gator Bowl Classic.

W. W. Gay, whose employees are the presenting sponsors of the Toyota Gator Bowl, said he started out as a volunteer in the 1950s, then moved up through the ranks and eventually became chairman.

“We sponsored the game because it has such a tremendous impact on the community,” said Gay. “Our employees have been very pleased with the sponsorship opportunity and we hope other companies will join us in supporting the game.

“Don’t be surprised if we have a future chairman among our employees,” he added.
