The Diocese of St. Augustine broke ground today on the faith-based Newman Student Housing Fund project along Alumni Way near the University of North Florida.

Plans filed with the city show a multiphase project on 6.43 acres at 11277 Alumni Way, near the UNF campus in Southside. The first phase is a 204-bed, three-story, 75,000-square-foot housing facility on 3.01 acres.

It would provide 69 apartment units for students and three for resident assistants.

The project is a mix of two-bedroom and four-bedroom apartments. Each student has his or her own private room.

The building is open to all faiths. The ministry is provided by the Catholic Church but not all programs are Catholic specific.
