It’s not the mayor’s race, but the list of ‘maybes’ for Duval County property appraiser is growing. In addition to Ann Shorstein, wife of State Attorney Harry Shorstein, City Council member Dr. Gwen Chandler may also enter the race.

At least that’s what she’s been told by others.

“I’ve heard that rumor, too. I’m certainly not going to deny it. It’s an idea that can germinate,” said Chandler. “I’m not going to confirm or deny my interest. A number of people have made that suggestion to me. I’ll give careful consideration to the opportunity. It is something I could easily do.”

The property appraiser’s job figures to draw a fair amount of attention, mainly because current Property Appraiser Ernie Mastroianni can’t run in 2003 due to term limits. Chandler, who was elected to Council as an at-large member in 1995, is also a term limit casualty next year and would like to stay involved politically.

Professionally, Chandler is employed by Florida Community College at Jacksonville at the Downtown campus in a dual capacity. She is department chair for the library and she also teaches an information technology class.

Chandler said before making a decision regarding the property appraiser race she will take some time to determine how much support she may have in the countywide race. Experience has taught her that support comes in two forms.

“There has to be some financial backing. Money aids in the solicitation of votes,” said Chandler, adding that being an at-large member of Council could be an advantage. “I would think so. One of the major aspects of a countywide race is name recognition.”

Should she opt to run, Chandler already has a campaign jingle in mind.

“My slogan will be, ‘We all win with Dr. Gwen.’ That’s everybody in Duval County,” said Chandler.
