After nearly 30 years focusing on bankruptcy and insolvency matters as an attorney with Smith Hulsey & Busey, Cynthia Carson Jackson was sworn in Friday as a judge of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Florida.
Daughter of late Jacksonville Sheriff Dale Carson and Dr. Doris Carson, Jackson was appointed March 5 by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, which appoints all bankruptcy judges in Florida, Georgia and Alabama.
Including Jackson, there are nine bankruptcy judges sitting in the Middle District of Florida, which stretches from Jacksonville to Fort Myers.
She replaces retiring Judge Arthur Briskman in the Orlando Division.
Before Jackson was one of 35 applicants for the seat on the bench in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, she represented debtors, creditors, committees, and trustees in commercial and consumer cases at Smith Hulsey & Busey where she was mentored by its current chairman, Stephen Busey.
“Cyndi has made me a better lawyer and a better person, most importantly, a better person,” said Busey.
Jackson attended Tulane University, received a bachelor’s degree from Florida State University in 1981, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Florida Levin College of Law in 1984.
