Jacksonville City Council installs 2021-22 officers

President Sam Newby and Vice President Terrance Freeman begin their terms July 1.

Jacksonville City Council members Sam Newby and Terrance Freeman were sworn in as 2021-22 president and vice president June 24 at City Hall.

President Newby was elected to the Council’s Group 5 At-Large seat in 2015 and re-elected in 2020.

He is a former chair of the Republican Party of Duval County and co-founder of the Florida Assembly of Black Republicans.

Vice President Freeman, also a Republican, was elected to Council’s Group 1 At-Large seat in 2019.

He formerly was political affairs manager at JAX Chamber and then was District 3 Council member Aaron Bowman’s executive assistant before he was elected.
