Jacksonville attorney Blane McCarthy will receive the 2015 Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award for the 4th Judicial Circuit.

McCarthy was nominated by a group of 18 attorneys involved in a pro bono project with Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, the City Rescue Mission and the Christian Legal Society, according to Jeanne Helton of Smith Hulsey & Busey.

“The time and professional expertise you have contributed in making legal representation available to those otherwise unable to afford it serve as an example of our profession at its best,” read a letter from Florida Bar President Gregory Coleman.

McCarthy will receive the award Jan. 29 in a ceremony at the Florida Supreme Court.

Iracki selected as member of ABOTA

Daniel Iracki has been selected for membership into the American Board of Trial Advocates, according to a news release from his firm.

The release said Iracki, 33, is the youngest attorney in Florida to become part of the group.

Iracki became a partner of Coker, Schickel, Sorenson, Posgay, Camerlengo & Iracki in October. He is a board-certified civil trial lawyer specializing in complex personal injury, wrongful death litigation and trial practice.

Public member sought to serve on Florida Bar board

The Florida Bar is seeking applicants for a member of the public to serve on its governing board.

Two members of the public have served on the Bar’s 52-member body since 1987 after the Supreme Court approved the organization’s request to have non-lawyers on the board, according to a news release from The Florida Bar.

A screening committee of the Bar’s Board of Governors will review the applications for the public member position, conduct final interviews and make recommendations to the Bar’s governing board during its March meeting in St. Petersburg.

The board will then recommend three people to the Supreme Court, which will appoint one of them to the board.

Board members average 200-300 hours per year on Bar business depending on committee assignments, according to the news release. Non-lawyer members are reimbursed for “reasonable travel and related expenses” for their work.

The new board member would serve a two-year term beginning June 26. Public members may not service more than two consecutive terms.

Applications are available on the Bar’s website, floridabar.org, or by calling (850) 561-5757 to request an application be mailed.

Completed applications should be mailed to John F. Harkness, Jr., The Florida Bar, 651 E. Jefferson St., Tallahassee, FL 32399-2300. The deadline is Jan. 30.
