The Association of Fundraising Professionals hosted National Philanthropy Day Wednesday at the Omni to recognize several individuals and organizations for their charitable efforts to the community. Those receiving awards included Wayne and Delores Weaver, Outstanding Philanthropists of the Year; Meaghan Hotchkiss, Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy; James Winston, Outstanding Volunteer Fund Raiser; First Coast Car Council, Outstanding Civic Organization; Edna Sproull Williams Foundation, Outstanding Foundation, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Outstanding Corporation.

Henri Landwirth, who escaped Nazi persecution to find his fortune in America, and in turn share his wealth with others, was the speaker.

“Philanthropy is not having any goals about ego, money or politics, but it’s about hard work and doing almost anything to change things,” said Landwirth.

His advice to other charitable organizations: create a business plan, be realistic about your abilities, look for cheap alternatives and don’t spend the money unless you’ve got it.

“By truly giving of your heart, mind and soul, you will get far more in return than you ever could have imagined,” he concluded.

Landwirth is the founder Give Kids the World and Dignity U Wear, which provides new clothing to homeless persons.
