Circuit Judge E. McRae "Mack" Mathis has submitted his retirement letter to Gov. Rick Scott, effective Dec. 31.

"It has been an honor and privilege to serve the State of Florida since February, 1976 as Assistant State Attorney and Circuit Court Judge," Mathis said in his two-sentence letter to the governor.

Mathis was appointed to the bench in 1999 by Gov. Jeb Bush after the retirement of Judge Willard Parsons.

Before that, Mathis worked in the state attorney's office, including as chief assistant state attorney from 1994-99.

He is married to Karen Brune Mathis, managing editor of the Daily Record.
