Mattress Firm Inc. announced Friday it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization and will close about 200 stores in the next few days.

Mattress Firm operates 20 stores in Northeast Florida, according to its website.

The company did not announce what stores are closing.

“The process we have initiated today will allow us to strengthen our balance sheet and accelerate the optimization of our store portfolio,” said Steve Stagner, executive chairman, president and CEO of Mattress Firm.

The company plans to close 700 stores leading up to the holiday season “in certain markets where we have too many locations in close proximity to each other,” Stagner said.

Houston-based Mattress Firm says on its website it has more than 3,000 stores across 49 states.
